Veteran's Club Meeting. June 10, 2023

Veteran's Club Meeting June 10, 2023 President Goody Morrison opened the meeting at 4:00 PM with the recitation of the Pledge of Allegiance. There were 21 members in attendance. The Secretary Cal Hunter reported that the minutes of the previous meeting were posted on the club’s website. A motion was made and seconded to accept the minutes and was accepted by the membership. Treasurer Steve Rosenthal reported that there was a balance of $7,000 in the bank. A discussion of the Veteran’s Day celebration on November 11 would include an Italian dinner catered by Mario’s at 7:00 PM in the clubhouse. There would be the morning flagpole celebration at 9:00 AM. A presentation by David Cohen followed, detailing his Vietnam War experiences. He was originally enrolled in the Hofstra University ROTC program in 1967. He was enrolled in the Army Signal Corps and Telephone Communications at Fort Bragg. He was sent to Vietnam in 1967 and served with the 1st Brigade. He detailed his combat experiences which were often times quite harrowing. Veteran's Club Meeting 2023-05-20

Following breakfast the meeting was opened at 9:30 AM, and the pledge of Allegiance was led by President Goody Morrison. There were 47 in attendance including family members. The Secretary’s Report was given and it was noted that Mike Heiserman had provided the contact for the previous meetings speakers. Palm Beach County Commissioner Maria Sacks and her colleague, Andrew Reese, the Director of the Department of Veteran’s Affairs presented a program explaining various veterans benefits and were able to answer questions from the members. The Treasurer’s Report followed and it was noted that there was a balance of $6,051 in the treasury after a donation of $4000 to the Wounded Veterans relief Fund. Goody then indicated that, at the last BOD meeting, it was decided to have dinner and dance at the next Veterans Day celebration. This would include Italian food and dessert. The 50/50 raffle followed. At this point the meeting was adjourned for the presentation by Evelyn Tichon, a friend of Mike Heiserman. The meeting at this point was opened to the Valencia Reserve Community at large. Mrs. Tichon was a relative of a Congressional Medal of Honor recipient who served during WWI, and was awarded the medal posthumously by Pres. Barack Obama. S/SGT William Shemin was originally denied the medal because he was Jewish, and it wasn’t until the efforts of his daughter, who pressured the authorities over the course of many years, and overcame issues of racism and bigotry, that he was finally recognized over a half a century later for his bravery during extremely dangerous combat conditions. Veteran's Club BOD Meeting Minutes March 30, 2023

The Board of Director’s meeting was opened at 4:00 PM and called to order by President Goody Morrison. The following members were present: Dennis Flier, Steve Rosenberg, David Cohen, Mike Heiserman, Howard Berger and Cal Hunter. The secretary’s report was next on the agenda and it was indicated that the minutes of the last board meeting were posted on the club’s website. Dennis Flier made a motion to accept the minutes and this was seconded by Steve Rosenberg. The members voted to approve. The treasurer’s report followed with Steve Rosenberg. He announced that the club’s balance was $4,883 and the pending barbecue raised $2,380 resulting in balance $7,263.the car show raised $5,300 and a donation was made to the WVRF in the amount of $3,432. Mike Heiserman reported that the car show registered 140 cars, 3 corvette clubs and was a huge success. He indicated that he needed more volunteers for the next show, Howard Berger suggested expanding the car show in the future to entertain more auto clubs and perhaps other car dealers. This was to be open for further discussion. Goody reported that the blood drive netted 27 pints and 4 platelet donations, and was considered a success. The next blood drive will take place on Nov.17 and there will be new membership forms available on the website. A discussion of the upcoming barbecue followed. Goody indicated that Fred Paul would be picking up the food from Lucille’s which would be stored in the new hot box recently acquired for the community. The DJ would be secured at a cost of $250, and there would also be a supply of water and soft drinks. In addition, two women would be hired to help as servers. The meeting was adjourned at 5:00PM. Veteran’s Club Meeting Minutes, March 9, 2023 The Meeting opened at 4:00PM with the Pledge of Allegiance. There were 21 members present. Vice President Howard Berger presided over the meeting. The secretary indicated that the minutes of the previous meeting had been posted to the Veteran’s Website. A motion was made to accept and seconded to accept the minutes. The treasurer’s report was given by Steve Rosenthal who indicated that there was a bank balance of$4,512. He said that 34 people had registered for the barbecue, and that the Car Show had brought in $1,550.00 and the Buick dealer donated $2,500 to the club. The Feb. dance cost $450.00. Mike Heiserman indicated that there were 83f registrations to date for the upcoming car show. There were to be 65 trophies which cost $2,000. He also arranged for the DJ, Ray and the Rayettes and as food truck. The Saturday April 4th barbecue will be catered bfy Lucilles. The presentation by Howard Beck followed. He presented an interesting history of the Tuskeegee Airmen who conducted themselves with courage and valor during World War ll, against many obstacle including marked racism and bigotry. Veteran’s Club Meeting Minutes, January 12, 2023

The meeting was opened by President Goody Morrison, with the reciting of the Pledge of Allegiance. There were 25 members in attendance. This was followed by the secretary’s report indicating that the minutes of the last meeting had been posted to the club’s website. A motion to accept the minutes was made, seconded and approved by the membership. A donation to the veteran’s club was received from the VR Bridge Club in honor of Ray Hoehn who recently passed and who was a member of the veteran’s club. The secretary sent a thank you letter to the bridge club, and a letter of condolence was sent to Ray’s wife Lucy, and expressing thanks for Ray’s service as veteran of World War II. Treasurer Steve Rosenthal reported next on the club’s financial status. There was a balance of $3,174 with an additional $2,500 due from the Buick dealer related to the car show. He announced that during the ten years of the club’s existence, there were never any dues and we were always able to raise enough to support the club. Mike Heiserman reported that there were 120 cars at the car show and $5,000 was raised as a result. For the next car show he has already personally sent out 150 letters and 22 so far have responded. He will hire a DJ has responses for food trucks. He need help to park cars and manage the registration forms. Goody announced that the February 24th Members Dance would be held at 7PM.This will be a free member’s only event with dessert. Dennis Flier announced that he will arrange for a trip to the Seal Museum. Goody Morrison started a presentation of the war in Ukraine dealing with ammunition, medical supplies and military weaponry given to Ukraine. Veteran’s Club Meeting Minutes, Dec. 11, 2022

Following breakfast, and the Pledge of Allegiance, the meeting was called to order by President Goody Morrison. There were 39 members in attendance. Treasurer Steve Rosenberg reported that after a donation of $4,000.00 to the Wounded Veteran’s relief Fund, $995 for the VR Plaque, and $600 to Kings Academy, there is a balance of $4296.19 less $185.47 in Fl sales tax due. This was followed by the secretary’s report that the minutes of the previous meeting had been posted to the club’s website. Motions to accept and seconded were made and approved by the membership. Jules Harper as donation chairman indicated that the Earl Stewart donations had yielded $1,000, and the donations of $7,000 to the WVRF totaled $165,000 to date. Mike Heisserman reported on the Veteran’s Car Show and noted that the parking fees alone at the last car show brought in $1,200. He asked for volunteers for the next car show. He needs help with parking, registering participants and general ushering. He plans to have a food truck and a DJ for the event. Steve Osterman gave his report as chairman of the blood drive. There were 38 blood donors and 1 platelet donor. He, also, asked for volunteers to help with the next blood drive. Mike Silverman reported on the plaque project which honors those Valencia Reserve Veterans who passed away. He showed the plaque which is to be displayed in the VR showcase. Mike also mentioned that his co-chairman of the plaque project, Dennis Flier had been admitted to the hospital following a fall. The election followed and Steve Osterman was elected to the Board of Directors. This was followed by a presentation by Richard Gorden who served in Vietnam as a physician with a paratroop division. He showed very graphic pictures of the effects of the battles and changes which took place on the troops from the beginning of their tour of duty to the end. Veteran’s Club Board Meeting Minutes October 27, 2022

The meeting was called to order at 4:00 PM. The following were in attendance: Mike Shiffman, Tom Wood, Dennis Flier, David Cohen, Howard Rock, Cal Hunter, and President Goody Morrison. The secretary indicated that the minutes of the previous board meeting had been posted to the club’s website. Mike Shiffman made a motion to accept the minutes and Dennis Flier seconded the motion Mike Shiffman and Dennis Flier reported on the memorial plaque which is in the process of being fabricated. This will honor the deceased veterans of Valencia Reserve, and will be prominently displayed during the Veteran’s Day celebration. It will be approximately 15x21 inches with 48 places for names. The cost will be approximately $900 to $1,000 and will ultimately reside in a prominent space in the Valencia Reserve showcase. A motion was made by Tom Wood and seconded by David Cohen to go ahead with the project. The Kings Academy Veteran’s Day Program is scheduled for November 17th and a request was made for volunteers to help set up the social hall and check people into the event. Nominations for elections of new board members will be made in November for the election at the December 11th meeting. Goody indicated that a presentation of $7,000 donation to the Wounded Veteran’s Relief Fund would be made at their Ball and would result in a matching donation. At present there is a balance of $4,000 less $500-$600 donation to the Kings Academy. A proposal was made by Goody to have a veteran’s Club dance in February with a DJ and a charge of $15 per person. Howard Rock made a motion to limit to member only and no charge, and this was seconded by Tom Wood. The motion passed. The meeting was adjourned at 4:40 PM. Submitted by Secretary Cal Hunter

Veteran’s Club Meeting Minutes, Oct. 13, 2022

The meeting was called to order at 4:00 PM.There were 24 in attendance, and Vice President Howard Berger was called upon to lead the Pledge of Allegiance. Secretary Cal Hunter reported that the minutes of the previous meeting were posted on the club’s website, and called for a motion to accept the minutes. A motion was made, seconded, and passed by the membership. The financial report was given by Steve Rosenthal who resumed his role as Treasurer after the passing of David Weissman. He reported that the club balance was $7,651.00. Goody in the absence of David Weissman, and indicated that the balance in the club’s treasury was in excess of $7,000. President Goody Morrison reported that 90 people have signed up for the King’s Academy concert. Steve Osterman, chairman of the Veteran’s Blood Drive indicated that there will be 3 busses available to collect blood from 8:30 AM until 4:00 PM on Nov.18. Donation Chairman Jules Harper reported that he has visited multiple golf courses and has attained certificates for groups of four people and has secured certificates that will provide approximately $1,800 for the club. He indicated the Earl Stewart was originally solicited by Goody Morrison for the use of his 65 foot yacht and 30 foot fishing boat which provided approximately $3,000 in donations, and this year should bring in approximately $2,800. Jules further announced that there is an organization that will match donated funds. This year we will have about $7,000 to donate and with the matching this will yield $14,000. To date, $155,000 has been donated to the Wounded Veteran’s Relief Fund. Goody announced that the details for November 11 flagpole ceremony will soon be provided. The King’s Academy event will bring in $15.00 per person and any excess collected in donations will be donated to the WVRF. Goody announced that Brian Glenn will be serving full time on the HOA board and was officially replaced by Mike Heiserman as a BOD member Dennis Flier announced that he will try to have a memorial plaque ready for Nov. 11. Matt Skolnick was introduced as a new member of the Veteran’s Club having served in the U.S. Army. -2- Tom Nowak was introduced as the presenter of a discussion on Drone Warfare. He detailed the evolution of battlefield weaponry and the advent of the use of drones in combat and intelligence gathering operations. The air force has the most drone pilots and drones have evolved from the simplest for reconnaissance to sophisticated drones with different types of weaponry {armaments). Veteran’s Club Board Meeting Minutes October 4, 2022

A special Board of Directors meeting was called to order at 2:00 PM to note the passing of Treasurer David Weissman, and to select a new treasurer. In attendance were the following board members: David Cohen, Howard Berger, Howard Rock, Mike Silverman, Mike Heiserman, Dennis Flier, Tom Wood, Tom Nowak, Cal Hunter, and President Goody Morrison. David Cohen made a motion to select Steve Rosenthal as the new treasurer. The motion was seconded by Tom Nowak and was unanimously approved by the members. Veteran’s Club Board Meeting Minutes September 22, 2022

The meeting was called to order at 4:00PM by President Goody Morrison. The following members were present: Dennis Flier Howard Berger, Tom Nowak, David Cohen, Tom Wood, Mike Silverman, Howard Rock, Cal Hunter, and Mike Heiserman as Car Show Chairman. The Secretary’s report indicated that the minutes of the previous meeting had been posted to the club’s website. A motion was made by Dennis Flier, seconded by Mike Silverman, and unanimously approved by the members. Goody read an email from Brian Glenn indicating that he will resign from his post as a member of the Veteran’s Club Board of Directors because of his commitment to the HOA. Goody then asked Mike Heiserman to rejoin the board in his place. He agreed and a motion was made by Dennis Flier and seconded by Howard Berger to accept him on the board. The motion was passed unanimously by the members. Goody announced that he has been contacted by Jules Harper that the Wounded Veteran’s Relief Fund will host a ball during which a donation of $5,000 would be matched. A motion was made by Mile Heiserman and seconded by Howard Berger to provide a check for that amount. In the absence of Treasurer David Weissman, Goody indicated that the club balance was $7,160 and an additional $2,000 would be coming in from golf sales and the use of Earl Stewart’s boat. Money was to be allocated for Fred Paul for breakfast expenses and the Saturday night dance dessert expenses. Mike Silverman next spoke about the creation of a memorial plaque for deceased Valencia Reserve veterans. The plaque would include the names and the branch of service and would be displayed selected occasions. Mike Silverman and Mike Heiserman will research the procurement of the plaque and the wording of the inscription. Goody noted that Mike Kapel would speak at the Nov.11th ceremony at the flagpole, and present a one-act play that he had written. Kings Academy will present a 15 member choir on Nov, 17 and will perform in the social hall with theater seating. A motion was made by Mike Heiserman and seconded by Tom Wood that only dessert would be provided and admission is to be $15.00 per person. The motion was passed. Mike Heiserman announced that Mark Schwartz had been very ill, and was now doing much better. He will soon start a new round of chemo-therapy. Closing remarks: Next Saturday night at the Club’s dance flags would be displayed and the décor will honor Ukraine.
