VR Veterans Club Secretary Secretary Reports

Veteran's Club Meeting Minutes from February 13th, 2014

Meeting opened at 1600 with 55 members in attendance. Total club membership is now 150 members.

An informal "Meet and Greet" with refreshments was held from 1600 to 1610.

Formal business meeting commenced at 1610 with the Pledge of Allegiance.

The Secretary's Report was presented and the minutes of our last meeting were voted on and accepted as written by the membership.

The Treasurer's Report was presented.

The President's Report was presented. It was noted that last month our Board of Directors met and discussed several different programs that we felt would be beneficial to our Veteran's community and to our club, including:

A Canned Food and Dry Goods drive will be conducted by our general members. This activity will occur on March 20th and donated food and dry goods will be given to our returning veterans in need. If you would like to get involved please send Jules an E-Mail.

We will be sharing the hosting of the Memorial Day Party at the clubhouse with our new HOA.

For our "summer residents" an August dance and dessert night is being planned at our clubhouse by Goody Morrison.

Mike Silverman is heading up a committee to look into the VA Cemetary located on route 441 in Lake Worth. His group will explore how it could be beneficial to our veteran's group.

The Board discussed our veterans club members talking about their military experiences. We all agreed that the veteran who gives the talk should be the person to decide whether "outside people" should be allowed to attend. The feeling was that this is a veteran's club and we want to keep these presentations limited to our membersihip in most cases. An exception to this norm would be that the speaker would have the option to invite non-member guests that they wanted to hear their presentation.

The Veteran's Day Party will be held again in November of this year.

Our Treasurer Steve Rosenthal brought up the subject of how much money we want to keep on hand in our treasury. It was felt that just enough funds to cover upcoming events and known expenses should be kept on hand. We all agreed that all other money would be donated to the Wounded Warriors of South Florida or to some other Veteran's group.

A discussion was held regarding the possibility of having selected Veteran's Club members function as emergency back-ups to Lang Management staff to operate Wei Valves for lake drainage in the event of flooding conditions.  It is under review by Lang Management at this time.

With regard to our website, President's messages will be updated every few weeks. Please review the "sickbay" section of the website often and give your fellow veteran a call if his name appears in this section.  Currently David Umanoff is home after being in the hospital.

Program Chairman Roger Ruddick provided an update on the progress of the Car Show preparations. The date of the Car Show being planned jointly by the Veteran's Club and the Car Club had to be changed to April 6th to avoid a conflict with another car show in our local area scheduled for our original March date. Roger still needs people to volunteer to help with this event. Please send him an E-Mail if you would like to assist and see a good car show!

New Business: It was recently learned that the laptop computer donated to our club by our President is not compatable for use by our webmaster to maintain our website in good order as originally intended. Accordingly, the Board has approved the purchase of a new laptop to be used for this purpose.

The Board has also voted to approve the purchase of a flag complete with flagstaff and weighted bottom to be used at events that are held away from the clubhouse.

President Jules Harper made an informative and highly professional presentation sharing his experiences flying the A-4 Skyhawk jet attack bomber in Vietnam from the aircraft carrier USS Kitty Hawk. His talk, entitled "Bringing The War to the Enemy" featured a movie taken from his cockpit during an actual combat mission. Jules completed 200 combat missions over North Vietnam during two nine month deployments on board the Kitty Hawk. He also discussed deployments to the Mediterranian during the Cold War where the nuclear attack mission was paramount. His session was very well received and was followed by a question and answer session. Jules' presentation was the second of our ongoing series where our members discuss various aspects of their own military experiences. Other members are encouraged to talk about their own experiences at future meetings. In addition to "Full Length" presentations like the first two in our series shorter "Mini-Presentations" of five to ten minutes where members discuss one selected personal experience are also encouraged.  Please contact Roger Ruddick if you would like to participate in this type of presentation.

It is anticipated that as much as $2,000 could be raised by the event. Volunteers to support the show were solicited and were requested to sign up after the meeting.

New Business was discussed. The Club is planning a late summer dance in the August timeframe. The event is in the early planning stages with additional details to follow.

The Club's Canned Food Drive planned for the March timeframe was discussed, and volunteers were solicited to help. All items collected will be passed directly to the Wounded Warriors of South Florida for immediate distribution to veterans in need. Volunteers were asked to sign up after the meeting.

Arrangements are being made to invite a guest speaker from the South Florida Veteran's Cemetery to discuss VA burial benefits and interment planning options for veterans.

Meeting opened at 1600 with approximately 40 members in attendance. It was followed by a joint meeting with the PAP Corps for today's guest speaker's presentation that was attended by a total of approximately 150 to 200 members and guests.

Formal business meeting commenced at 1600 with the Pledge of Allegiance.

The President's Report was presented. It was noted that the Veteran's Club business meeting would be held first followed by a joint meeting with the PAP Corps for today's guest speaker presentation immediately following the end of year business meeting.

Two proposed changes to our existing By-Laws were discussed, voted upon and accepted as follows:

Section V: Number 2: was changed to "One member will be designated Program/Fund raising Chairman." The original "Two members will be designated Program/Fund Raising Chairman and Membership Chairman" was deleted. This change allows for one additional member to be on the Board of Directors and continues to keep a non-voting Membership Chairman.

Section V: Number 5: adds "As long as the club has a website the Board of Directors will designate a Webmaster to insure the site is properly maintained."

Marty Spiro has volunteered to be our Webmaster and was voted into that position.

Tom Conklin and Nelson Cusher were voted in as members of the Board of Directors.

All members who have not yet contributed $7.00 for the development and maintenance of our website were requested to do so.

Starting next year we hope to have our members talk about their experiences in the military on an ongoing basis. Beginning with our January 9th meeting one of our own members Jeff Greehhut, who is  a professional military historian, will begin the series by talking about Viet Nam. At our February 13th session Jules Harper will continue the series by discussing his Viet Nam experiences while flying combat missions from the aircraft carrier USS Kitty Hawk, complete with a movie. Other members are encouraged to talk about their own experiences at future meetings.

The Treasurer's Report was presented.

A check in the amount of $338.00 for the Wounded Warriors of South Florida was received from the Valencia Reserve Italian American Club. This represented the proceeds from the 50/50 raffle at their last meeting.

Plans for the upcoming March 9th Car Show to be held at Canyon Town Center were reviewed. The show will be jointly sponsored by the Veteran's Club and the Car Club with the proceeds donated to the Wounded Warriors of South Florida.

The joint meeting with the PAP Corps commenced at 1615. Marvin Zeitner from the PAP Corps welcomed all to the joint meeting.

Veteran's Club President Jules Harper introduced guest speakers Mort Brooks and Bill Jeffers. Both Mort and Bill were Jewish Prisoners of War of the Germans in World War II. Mort was an infantryman captured by the Germans at the Battle of the Bulge, and Bill was a B-17 navigator captured with his crew by the Germans after ditching in the North Sea as a result of battle damage from anti-aircraft fire over their target. Both Mort and Bill discussed their POW and survival experiences, with particular emphasis on their treatment as Jews by the Germans, and their later transition back to civilian life after the war. Their emotional presentations were exceptionally well received by all in attendance.

During the question and answer period that followed a member of the audience was moved to spontaneously relate his personal experiences as a Jewish infantryman also captured by the Germans at the Battle of the Bulge. His impromptu discussion was similarly well received by the audience.

Following their presentations the POW veterans received a standing ovation from all present.

Veteran's Club Meeting Minutes from November 7, 2013

Meeting opened at 1600 with 45 members in attendance.  Total club membership is now 128 members.

Formal meeting commenced at 1600 with the Pledge of Allegiance to our flag.

Jules Harper introduced our guest speaker:

The Tuskegee Airmen were dedicated, determined young men who enlisted to become America's first black military airmen. During World War II, American military was racially segregated, as was much of the federal government. The Tuskegee Airmen were subjected to racial discrimination, both within and outside the army. They came from every section of the country. Each one possessed a strong personal desire to serve the United States of America at the best of his ability.

Almost 1,000 Black airmen were trained at Tuskegee, Alabama and sent overseas to fly escort planes for our bombers that were flying raids over Germany. For those of you who may have seen the movie “Red Tails”, you know that they did a fantastic job of protecting our bombing efforts during the war.

We are fortunate to have one of these Tuskegee Airmen here with us today. Please give a round of applause for Lt. Colonel, Leo Gray.

Leo Gray spoke to us for 45 minutes without the use of any notes.  Leo is 89 years old and was "sharp as a tack".  He answered questions from the audience which included about 55 Veterans and their wives and another 40 Valencia Reserve "neighbors" that paid $5.00 per person to attend.  All of that money will be sent to the Wounded Warriors of South Florida.

Everyone in attendance sat mesmerized while Leo described the conditions he lived though during the war as a black Tuskegee Airman.  It was truly a historic occasion as there are only 33 members of the  "Red Tails'  still alive!  He is planning to be at the Lost Squadron Presentation in Fort Lauderdale on December 5th.

If you would like to see Leo, sign up for our Bus Trip on Dec 5th, there is still plenty of room and we need 20 more members to join us.  We would like to take 50 Veterans down to Fort Lauderdale.

Meeting was cut short due to length of Leo's talk and Italian American Club needed the Social Hall.

He discussed how the Children's Coalition directly involves Palm Beach County high school students in conducting interviews with veterans for the project, developing both the written and video records of the interviews, and how the completed audio/visual transcripts of the interviews are forwarded to the Library of Congress to be made available to the public on their website. His presentation was well received by those in attendance.
