VR Veterans Club Secretary Secretary Reports

Veteran's Club Meeting Minutes From December 11, 2016

Our Sunday breakfast meeting opened at 0900 with 40 members in attendance. Total club membership is 176.

An informal "Meet and Greet" with breakfast was held from 0900 to 0930.

Formal business commenced at 0930 with the "Pledge of Allegiance".

The Secretary's Report was presented and the minutes of our last meeting were voted upon and accepted by the membership.

The Treasurer's Report was presented. It was noted that we currently have $3,593.00 on hand, with a payment of $398.00 for Florida sales tax due by the end of December. We donated $10,060 to the Wounded Veteran's Relief Fund from our Veteran's Day Party and Auction, and $2,828.00 from our annual Car Show. To date we have donated a total of $44,200.00 to the Wounded Veteran's Relief Fund.

The President's Report was presented. It was noted that our Veteran's Day Party and Auction was a great success with over $10,000 raised for the Wounded Veteran's Relief Fund. Les Ungerlieter and his wife Linda were recognized for their exceptional efforts in soliciting items for auction and organizing the auction event. Their efforts resulted in a silent auction that included over 90 articles. Jules also noted that we have received considerable positive feedback from those attending the event. The Party proceeded seamlessly and the President thanked all of those who helped to make our signature event a great success.

The President also recognized Joel Moskowitz and Bob Goldberg for their efforts in collecting and producing the veteran's picture display featuring 70 pictures of our members from their service days. The display proved to be very popular and we hope to expand it for next year's Party.

Along with veterans from the Valencia Point community several of our members raised flags to half-staff at the South Florida Veteran's Cemetary for Veteran's Day. It was noted that flags are being flown at half-staff in honor of John Glenn until he is buried, and they are also flown at half-staff on December 7th in commemoration of Pearl Harbor Day.

Jules noted that the flag now flying over our clubhouse was donated by Michael Golden. Michael was also recognized for procuriing a dozen watches all of which were sold for $50.00 each adding to the funds generated for the Wounded Veteran's Relief Fund.

Our annual Canned Food Drive will be held in February, with the exact date to be determined.

Car Show Chairman Mike Heiserman provided an update on our annual car show, scheduled this year for March 19, 2017. It will be held at the Buick Dealership in Del Ray, and the agreement with them has been finalized. Brian Zelinsky is the point of contact with the Valencia Reserve Car Club for the event. He is developing a flyer for distribution to publicize the show.

A discussion was held regarding the possibility of having a social dinner for Veteran's Club members and their spouses/guests. There was considerable interest in holding such an event. The consensus was that the dinner should be a "pay as you go" event not subsidized by Veteran's Club funds. Options of holding the dinner either at the clubhouse or at a restaurant offsite were discussed, with consensus leaning toward having it at a restaurant. Further research will be conducted to work out the details.

Jules noted no dues are required for our club.

It was noted that the number of WWII veterans were decreasing rapidly with only a million or so remaining. It was suggested that we do something to recognize our World War II veterans. Accordingly, we are scheduling a senior WWII vet to address our members at our January meeting.

Steve Rosenthal and Dennis Flier attended the annual Valencia Reserve club introduction meeting and recruited five new members for our club. They noted that many veteran's who were reservists were not aware that they were eligible to join our club. We agreed to work to publicize across the Valencia Reserve Community by various means the fact that reservists are veterans and eligible for club membership.

It was noted that the Honor Flight Program has now been expanded to include Korean and other veterans, and was no longer limited to World War II veterans.

Jules discussed the motion passed by the Board to amend our By-Laws to specify that a DD214 along with residency in the Valencia Reserve community are requirements for membership in our club. This motion was passed by the Board to clarify the requirement that a club member be a veteran of the US Armed Forces and to provide a clear criteria for establishing veteran status. The question was raised as to whether the posession of an "Honorable Discharge" should be added to the criteria for membership. It was noted that discharges "Under Honorable Conditions" might include medical or administrative discharges, or discharges for the convenience of the government. After further discussion it was decided not to include an "Honorable Discharge" requirement in the criteria for membership. The motion to require a DD214 was voted upon and accepted by our membership.

Election Chairman Norm Beck reviewed the slate of candidates for Officer and Board Member positions, and elections were held as required by our By-Laws. Vice President Goody Morrison and Treasurer Steve Rosenthal were re-elected to their positions, and Mike Heiserman, Marty Tremper and Dave Weisman were elected to the Board. All candidates were voted in unanimously by the members present.

President Jules Harper recognized Vice President Goody Morrison and Treasurer Steve Rosenthal for their hard work throughout the year.

At the suggestion of Steve Rosenthal Jules Harper received a round of applause in recognition of his exceptional efforts on behalf of the Veteran's Club throughout his tenure as President.

It was noted oted that the Club has a very good reputation within the VR community for our initiatives on behalf of the Wounded Veterans Relief Fund.

The possibility of conducting a Veteran's Club trip to the Navy Seal Museum at Fort Pierce was discussed. A number of members indicated interest, and this will be explored as a possible activity in the new year.

An interesting and informative slide presentation was made by President Jules Harper on the Fort Pierce Seal Museum. The presentation was well received by our members.
