Veteran's Club Meeting Minutes from April 26, 2015
Meeting opened at 0900 with 52 members in attendance.
An informal "Meet and Greet" with refreshments was held from 0900 to 0930. Photos from our recent food drive were screened during the "Meet and Greet".
Formal business commenced at 0930 with the Pledge of Allegiance. Vice President Goody Morrison chaired today's meeting.
The Secretary's Report was presented and the minutes of our last meeting were voted on and accepted by the membership.
The Treasurer's Report was presented. A cash balance of $3,432 is on account in our treasury. It was noted that 48 members were paid up for our Fleet Week ship visit trip, yielding a $79.00 surplus for our treasury from the event.
The President's Report was presented. Results of last month's Blood Drive were reviewed. A total of 66 pints were collected.
It was noted that this year's Canned Food Drive resulted in over 4,000 cans of food collected and donated to the Wounded Warriors of South Florida. Mike Tremper will be our Food Drive chairman for next year.
Vice President Goody Morrison provided an update on our Tuesday May 5th Fleet Week visit to the USS Wasp in Fort Lauderdale. Those participating should be at the Clubhouse not later than 0800 to board the bus. Members should wear their Veteran's Club shirt, hat and either khaki trousers or shorts. Plans call for us to board the ship between 1000 and 1015. Since there are no eating and drinking facilities on the tour you may want to bring a snack and some water to hold you over until we return. We will be returning to Valencia around 1300. All adults will be required to show a government-issued picture ID. Pants are suggested for women. A ship is an industrial environment with steep stairways/ladders, so avoid high-heels, open-toed shoes and sandals and wear shoes with low, rubberized soles. Also avoid necklaces that can get caught and bags that will impact your ability to climb steep stairs/ladders with both hands. Cameras are permitted.
It was noted that our annual Pool Party with the HOA would be on May 25. Vice President Goody Morrison will be the Chairman for the event.
Guest Tom Kaiser of the American Legion invited members to visit the Veteran's Memorial Park on Boynton Beach Boulevard and Federal Highway where monuments honoring veterans of many of our major conflicts could be viewed. He also briefed on the free Washington DC trips available to World War II and Korean veterans. He also provided information on how World War II veterans who served in France could file the paperwork to obtain a medal from the French Government recognizing their service. Similarly, medals could be obtained from the Philippine Government by those World War II veterans who served in the Philippine Liberation Campaign.
50/50 drawing was held
Treasurer Steve Rosenthal made an exceptionally interesting presentation on Marine Corps basic training that included a discussion of his own experiences as well as several well selected film clips from major motion pictures. The presentation was well received and was followed by a lively question and answer period.
