Veteran's Club Meeting Minutes For May 12, 2016
Our meeting opened at 1600 with 30 members and one guest in attendance. Total club membership is 168.An informal "Meet and Greet" was held from 1600 to 1620.Formal business commenced at 1620 with the "Pledge of Allegiance".The Secretary's Report was presented and the minutes of our last meeting were voted upon and accepted by the membership.The Treasurer's Report was presented. It was noted that we currently have a cash balance on hand of $3,278.00. Car Show proceeds of $2,798.00 were presented to the Wounded Warriors of South Florida, bringing the total of funds donated to that organization to $34,977 since the Veteran's Club inception. An additional $200.00 generated by our Fleet Week trip will also be forwarded to the Wounded Warriors.The President's Report was presented. President Jules Harper read a letter of thanks received from the Wounded Warriors of South Florida for our donation from the Car Show.Jules also noted that the upcoming Memorial Day Party would take place on May 30th. It will start at f1:00 PM and the Veteran's Club will conduct the Pledge of Allegiance at 2:00 PM. The Party will be over at 3:00 PM. There will be a musical group performing and frozen ices will be served like last year. Veteran's Club members are requested to wear their club cap along with your blue club shirt, shorts or a swim suit. We will have a table set up and hope to receive donations. Please put the event on your calendar so that we will have a good showing.Vice President Goody Morrison noted that we are submitting pictures from the Car Show for the July/August edition of "Reflections" circulated to the Valencia Reserve Community.President Jules Harper reviewed the schedule of upcoming events for 2016:Scheduled Sunday breakfast meeting dates for 2016 are indicated below:--Sunday June 12, 2016, 9:00 AM--12:00 noon--Sunday September 11, 2016, 9:00 AM--12:00 noon--Sunday December 11, 2016, 9:00 AM--12:00 noon (Annual Meeting)All meetings will be held in the Social Hall.Scheduled Second Thursday of the month meetings for 2016 are as indicated below:--Thursday October 13, 2016, 4-6 PM--Thursday November 10, 2016, 4-6 PMAll meetings will be held in the Social Hall.2016 Projected Schedule of Veteran's Club Events is indicated below:--Blood Drive: October 28, 2016--Pool Party with HOA: May 30, 2016 (Memorial Day)--Veteran's Day Dance: November 11, 2016 (3-11 PM)Board Member Mike Silverman presented an interesting and informative briefing on the economic, political and military conditions that lead up to the attack on Pearl Harbor and the Philippine Islands on December 7th and 8th, 1941. The presentation was well received by our membership.Following Mikes's presentation president Jules Harper spoke briefly about a presentation made by Ken Rifkin at the last History Club meeting on the World War II Doolittle Raid. He also briefly discussed the British victory at the Battle of Taranto where British carrier aviation sunk a number of Italian battleships altering the balance of naval power in the Mediterranean.The President noted in his concluding remarks that our next meeting will be a breakfast meeting on Sunday June 12, 2016 from 9:00 AM to 12:00n noonin the Social Hall.The meeting concluded at 1705.Minutes submitted by Tom Nowak, Veteran's Club Secretary
