Veteran's Club Meeting Minutes From December 10, 2017

Our Sunday breakfast meeting opened at 0900 with 45 members and several guests in attendance. Total club membership is now 184.

An informal "Meet and Greet" with breakfast was held from 0900 to 0930.

Formal business commenced at 0930 with the "Pledge of Allegiance".

Vice President Goody Morrison chaired today's meeting since our President was on travel.

The Secretary's Report was presented and the minutes of our last meeting were voted upon and accepted by the membership.

The Treasurer's Report was presented. It was noted that we currently have a cash balance on hand of $3,732.00, with a sales tax liability of $647.00 outstanding. A total of $8,703.00 was generated from the Veteran's Day Party, bringing the five year total of our donations to the Wounder Veteran's Relief Fund to $56,784.00.

The Vice President's Report was presented. Members werre thanked for attending the Veteran's Day Flagpole Ceremony. 

It was noted that our Blood Drive on December 1st was a great success, with 76 donors giving 64 pints of blood. Plasma was also collected. Blood Drive Chairman Tom Conklin, assisted by Steve Metzger, were thanked for running the program, as were those who donated.

Dennis Flier noted that at our January 11th meeting the speaker will be Lisa Lesle, a four time Olympic Basketball Gold Medal Winner and former Air Force Captain who hales from a military family.

Dennis also briefed on plans for our upcoming January 23rd field trip to the Navy and Marine Corps Reserve Center at West Palm Beach. Participants will meet with active duty Sailors and Marines, review current equipment and armament, see how parachutes are rigged and get an updated on current events. A flyer with details will be promulgated in the near future. Members interested in attending should sign up on our website.

Goody Morrison noted that preparations are underway for our Spring BBQ and Dance to be held on Saturday, April 21st in the clubhouse. Details will be promulgated when they become available.

Elections of Officers and Board Members were conducted, and the entire slate was unaimously approved by all members present. President Jules Harper and Secretary Tom Nowak were re-elected, as were Board Members Nelson Cusher, Dennis Flier, Mike Silverman and Tom Wood. Mark Schwartz's appointment to the Board was also confirmed. Goody recognized Elections Chairman Norm Beck for his good work coordinating the elections.  

Veteran's Club Secretary CDR Tom Nowak, USNR (Ret.), spoke about Prisoner of War experiences throughout our country;s history, based on a tour of active duty as a Naval Intelligence Officer at the Navy Prisoner of War Studies Center in San Diego. Tom discussed what the Navy has learned about the long term physical and psychological impact of exrtended captivity as a POW, and what lessons have been learned to better prepart high risk service members  to survive a future POW experience. The presentation was well received by all hands and was followed by a lively question and answer period.

All Sunday breakfast meetings will be held in the Social Hall from 9:00 AM to 11:00 AM.

The Vice President noted in his concluding remarks that our next meeting would be on January 11th at 1600 in the Social Hall. He also wished all a great new year.

The Meeting concluded at 1045.
